Hackberry is a diffuse-porous hardwood with a lifespan of around 150-200 years. In ideal conditions, this species can grow relatively quickly when young, as indicated in the larger width of rings toward the center of this piece. While the tree itself is hardy + resilient in terms of environmental conditions, hackberry is a relatively soft hardwood that can be brittle + more prone to splitting or breaking under pressure.

Typically considered a flaw to be easily broken, this print was composed with the fractures reassembled to reveal beauty in vulnerability. through its reconstruction, it takes on new life, embodying the title “recon”.

Original relief print on Japanese rice paper, mounted to canvas, surrounded by black floater frame.
