The Chinese elm is a stately deciduous tree commonly found in China, Korea, and Japan. With its graceful, upright form, this species can grow to impressive dimensions, reaching heights of 40 to 50 feet. Revered for its strength and resilience, the Chinese elm is famously capable of weathering fierce winds and physical stress. Even so, this tree met its demise during the intense storms that swept through northern California in the spring of 2023.
This particular cut reveals a print that resembles delicate, finger-like forms on stony coral from the genus “Porites,” inspiring the name for this piece.
Porites is an original relief print on Japanese rice paper, mounted to canvas and surrounded by a black floater frame.
